Articles: local advertising

Advertising within a few streets works differently from an online campaign. What counts is whether people recognise you and whether they have your number to hand. These pieces compare leaflets, posters and business cards, and show how to remind regulars about the next service.

More about: local advertising

A small business rarely fights for the attention of a whole country. It fights for a few neighbourhoods, for people walking past the window or looking for a service close to home. Print does well here because it stays - on the fridge, in a drawer, in the glovebox - far longer than a post that scrolls past in seconds.

Leaflet, poster or business card

Each of these has a different job and works best at a different moment. A leaflet lands in a letterbox and has to stand on its own. A poster works from a distance, so it tolerates only a few words. A card is handed over in conversation, when interest already exists.

  • Leaflet - one concrete offer, address, phone number and a reason to keep it.
  • Poster - a single thought, large lettering, readable from across the road.
  • Business card - contact details and a plain statement of what you do.
  • Reminder card - the date of the next visit or service written in front of the customer.

A returning customer costs less than a new one

Garages, clinics and local service points share one advantage: customers come back on a cycle. They just need reminding. A card with the next service date, a stamped loyalty pad or a simple fridge magnet quietly do work that is easy to overlook when planning advertising.

The best results come from combining channels. Print builds presence in the area, the internet makes it easy to check the company before the first call. Think of them together rather than choosing one at the cost of the other.
