Digipack 6P (two-fold) - The 6P digipak is a two-fold card pack for a disc. Folded, it has three panels, so it gives noticeably more room for graphics and content than the simpler 4P version. Nine constructions are available, including versions for two discs and a variant for three. All the options are set directly in the calculator.

6P digipak - three panels for a fuller release

The 6P digipak is a card pack in a two-fold version. Unfolded it gives three panels printed across their whole surface; closed, a compact, convenient form. The disc sits in a plastic tray glued into the board. The packaging therefore becomes part of the whole release design, not just protection for the disc.

It is a good direction for projects that no longer fit on the two panels of a 4P digipak. The 6P version also has a very wide choice of constructions - nine variants in total, including several layouts for double releases and a construction holding three discs.

Where the name 6P comes from

The figure before the letter P is the number of printed board surfaces, not the number of discs in the pack.

A 6P digipak has six surfaces: three outer and three inner. In practice that gives three panels and two fold lines, hence the term "two-fold".

For comparison, a digipack 4P has two panels and one fold, while the more elaborate digipack 8P has four panels. How many discs go inside is decided by the separate "Type" option in the calculator.

When the two-fold version works

Three panels give more freedom in arranging the cover, graphics, photographs and texts. The 6P digipak is chosen for, among others:

  • music albums with a booklet, photographs and a track list,
  • two- and three-disc releases, such as compilations, live albums or editions with bonus material,
  • training sets and courses split across several discs,
  • conference material, where one disc holds the talks and another the supporting files,
  • anniversary and collector's editions,
  • portfolios and presentations where the graphic treatment matters more.

Type - construction of the pack

The "Type" option changes the actual construction of the digipak. Nine variants are available:

  • Standard - one disc in a tray on one panel; the other two can be used for graphics and content.
  • With a booklet slot - slots cut in the board hold the corners of the booklet.
  • With a booklet pocket - the pocket is not glued on. It is formed by the board itself, because part of the surface is left unglued during gluing. The booklet slides in whole. A ticket, a folded poster, signed band photos or stickers fit there too.
  • Tray on the right - the tray sits on the right panel instead of the left.
  • For 2 discs - two trays in the basic layout.
  • For 2 discs, side panels - the trays sit on the outer panels and the middle one stays free.
  • For 2 discs with a slot - two trays plus slots for a booklet.
  • For 2 discs with a pocket - two trays and a pocket for a booklet or other material.
  • For 3 discs - three trays, one on each panel.

Two-disc variants and the three-disc version

For 2 discs is the basic double construction. The trays sit next to each other and the third panel stays free for, say, a photograph, graphics or a track list.

For 2 discs, side panels is a completely different interior. The trays sit on the outer panels while the middle stays empty. That gives a wide, clearly visible area for graphics, for example a band photo or an illustration running across the centre of the spread.

The for 2 discs with a slot and for 2 discs with a pocket variants also make room for a booklet. A slot is visually lighter and lets the booklet be taken out easily. A pocket tucks it deeper and holds it more firmly.

For 3 discs has one tray on each panel. This construction can be used for an album with bonus material or a course split into several modules.

Tray on the right is a separate variant. It changes the whole interior: the left panel stays free and can become the main graphic area. On opening, the graphics are seen first and the disc only afterwards.

Finishing

The printed board can be laminated. Besides protecting the surface, this also affects the look and character of the finished pack.

  • Gloss film - strengthens colours and gives the surface a shine. A classic finish, often seen on music releases.
  • Matt film - gives a calmer effect and limits reflections. Fingerprints are less visible on it, so it is often chosen for dark covers.
  • Soft Touch velvet film - a matt surface that feels like fine suede. It gives the pack a more refined character.
  • Matt film with spot UV varnish - the whole surface stays matt while selected parts, such as a logo, a title or a detail of the graphics, are covered with gloss varnish. The difference between matt and gloss shows in the light and can also be felt under the finger.

Spot UV varnish requires a separate file with a mask marking the areas to be varnished. Not every construction can be combined with this finish, so the calculator shows only the available configurations.

Tray and printing of the inner spine

The tray is a plastic element glued into the board that holds the disc in place. Three versions are available:

  • clear - lets you see the printed board under the disc, so the interior graphics stay visible,
  • black - separates the disc from the background more strongly and gives clear contrast,
  • for a USB card, clear - holds a credit-card-format USB drive instead of a disc. This can be used for company material, presentations and training sets.

A separate option is printing of the inner spine, the strip of board along the fold line. Without it, white strips remain there.

With a light design they are usually not very noticeable. But if the whole interior is dark or intensely coloured, a white line can cut sharply across the graphics. In that case it is better to choose spine printing and keep the colour continuous.

Assembly and shrink-wrapping of finished sets

Assembly means we prepare the finished set on our side.

  • No assembly - you receive the packs alone and put in the discs and other elements yourself.
  • Disc assembly - we place the discs in the trays.
  • Disc and booklet assembly - besides the discs we also put the booklet into the prepared slot or pocket.

On a larger run, and especially with two- and three-disc releases, assembling by hand can take a good deal of time. Assembly lets you collect finished sets instead.

Shrink-wrapping of finished sets means protecting the assembled pack with sealed film. It protects the product during transport and storage, limits dust and gives the whole the look of a finished release ready for sale or distribution.

Wrapping is done on assembled packs, so this option is tied to assembly.

Booklets are ordered separately as booklets for digipaks.

How to prepare the print file

Prepare the 6P digipak artwork as a spread, that is the whole unfolded form of the three panels. Do not send each panel as a separate page.

The remaining requirements:

  • colour in CMYK, not RGB; automatic conversion can affect colour tone,
  • photographs at 300 dpi, and for fine elements preferably 600 dpi,
  • 3 mm bleed on every edge, with important elements at least 3 mm from the trim lines,
  • a PDF file with fonts converted to outlines, or a flattened TIF in CMYK.

With a 6P digipak, pay particular attention to the two fold lines. A logo, a title or a face in a photograph should not fall exactly there, because after folding the graphics will crease at those points and can lose legibility.

If a line of text is to run across several panels, plan it so that the folds fall between words rather than through letters. More information is in the file preparation section.

What does 6P mean in the name of a digipak?

The figure next to the letter P is the number of printed board surfaces, not the number of discs in the pack.

A 6P digipak has six sides: three outer and three inner. That gives three panels joined by two fold lines, which is why we call the construction two-fold.

The number of discs is chosen separately under "Type". For the 6P there are constructions holding one, two or three discs.

How many discs does a 6P digipak hold?

From one to three, depending on the construction chosen.

The standard version and the variants with room for a booklet are for one disc. There are also four double constructions: the basic one, one with trays on the side panels, one with a booklet slot and one with a pocket.

The fullest variant holds three discs, with each of the three panels having its own tray.

How does the 6P differ from the 4P and 8P versions?

Mainly in the number of panels, and so in how much room there is for graphics and content.

A 4P digipak has two panels and one fold. It is the simplest and most compact version. A 6P digipak has three panels and two folds, so it gives noticeably more surface while staying a handy pack.

The 8P version has four panels and three fold lines. It is meant for fuller projects that need still more space.

The 6P digipak also stands out for having the widest choice of construction variants.

Which two-disc version should I choose?

It depends above all on how the interior should look.

The basic two-disc variant has the trays next to each other, while the third panel stays free for graphics, a photograph or a track list.

In the construction with trays on the side panels both discs sit at the edges and the middle panel stays free. Wide graphics meant to be the main element of the interior look good there.

If you need a booklet alongside the discs, choose the variant with a slot or a pocket.

What is the tray-on-the-right variant for?

In this construction the tray moves from the left panel to the right. That changes how the whole interior looks when opened.

The left panel stays free and can become the main area for a photograph, an illustration or a title. The viewer therefore sees the graphics first and the disc, on the right, only afterwards.

A good solution for asymmetric designs, or ones where the left side of the spread should play the leading role. The construction is still a three-panel 6P digipak.

Booklet slot or booklet pocket?

A slot means cuts made directly in the board that hold the corners of the booklet. The booklet is visible as soon as the pack is opened, and taking it out and putting it back is easy.

A pocket is not a separate, glued-on element. It is formed by the board of the pack, because part of the surface is left unglued during gluing. The booklet slides in whole. A ticket, a folded poster, signed band photos or stickers fit there too.

A pocket holds the contents more firmly and protects a thicker booklet better in transit. For releases sent by courier, or with a fuller booklet, it can be the more convenient solution.

Can I order a digipak booklet from you?

Yes. Booklets and inserts for digipaks and ecopaks are available from us as a separate product.

It is worth choosing them together with the packaging, because the slot construction and the pocket variant have slightly different requirements for the booklet.

What is matt film with spot UV varnish?

First the whole board surface is covered with matt film. Then gloss varnish is applied to selected places - a logo, a title, an outline or a detail of an illustration.

This creates clear contrast between the matt surface and the glossy areas. The effect shows in the light, and the difference can also be felt under the finger.

The varnish needs an additional file with a mask marking exactly the areas to be varnished. Not every construction can be combined with this finish, so the calculator shows only the available variants.

Which film should I choose for a dark design?

For dark covers, black ones in particular, matt or Soft Touch velvet film is often chosen.

Matt limits reflections and makes fingerprints less visible. Soft Touch is also matt, but it additionally has a delicate, suede-like surface and gives the pack a more refined character.

Gloss film emphasises colours more strongly and looks good with photographs. On large dark surfaces, however, finger marks can be more visible.

You choose the right variant under the finishing option.

Clear tray or black tray?

Through a clear tray you can see the printed board under the disc. If there is a photograph, an illustration or a pattern in that part of the design, the graphics stay part of the visible interior.

A black tray contrasts more strongly with the board and clearly separates the disc from the background. It can suit a design where the surface under the tray is an even, darker colour.

Both variants do the same job, so the choice depends mainly on how the whole design should look.

What is the USB card tray for?

It is a clear tray shaped for a credit-card-format USB drive instead of a traditional disc.

Material can then be handed over on USB media while keeping the form and presentation of a disc release. This can be useful for company presentations, training and other material intended for people working on computers without optical drives.

A USB card can also be combined with disc trays in one digipak, if the chosen construction allows it.

Is it worth printing the inner spine?

That depends above all on the design.

The inner spine is the narrow strip of board along the fold line. If it is not printed, white strips may remain there.

With a light interior they usually do not draw attention. With a black, navy or intensely coloured design, white lines become far more visible and can break the continuity of the graphics.

In that case inner spine printing is worth choosing. You will find the option in the calculator.

What do assembly and shrink-wrapping of sets cover?

Assembly means the finished sets are prepared on our side.

Without assembly you receive the packs alone. With disc assembly we put the media into the trays. The variant covering discs and booklets means we also place the booklet in the prepared slot or pocket.

Wrapping means protecting the finished, closed pack with sealed film. It protects the set during transport and storage and limits dust. It is done on the assembled product, so it is tied to assembly.

What runs can I order and where do I see the price?

The minimum run is 50 pieces. The next available steps are 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 pieces.

You choose the run directly in the calculator, together with the construction, finishing, tray, spine printing, assembly and wrapping.

How do I prepare the artwork file for print?

Prepare the artwork as a spread, that is the full unfolded form of all three panels, not as separate pages.

Work in CMYK. Automatic conversion from RGB can affect colour tone. Prepare photographs at 300 dpi, and for fine elements 600 dpi is better.

Add 3 mm bleed on every edge and keep important elements at least 3 mm from the trim lines.

Send the finished artwork as a PDF with fonts converted to outlines, or a flattened TIF in CMYK.

Remember the two fold lines as well. A logo, texts and other important elements should not fall exactly there.
