COSMO metal pens - Our most popular metal pen. An aluminium barrel measuring 135×10 mm, an engraving area of 65.0×6.0 mm, and the widest choice of barrel colours in our whole pen range. Marked with YAG laser engraving. Minimum order 100 pieces.

COSMO - a metal classic, 10 mm across

The COSMO is the model customers choose most often, and the one the rest of our range is easiest to compare against. The aluminium barrel is 135 mm long and ø 10 mm across - a classic size, not overstated in either direction. The pen is neither very slim nor bulky; it sits well in the hand and has the proportions most people are used to.

That diameter also leaves more room for legible engraving. The marking area on the COSMO is 65.0×6.0 mm. By comparison, the COSMO SLIM has an equally long field, but at ø 7 mm its height is only 4 mm. The line of text can be a similar length, but on the COSMO the letters can be larger, and a logo with a second, smaller line does not have to be squeezed nearly as hard.

The other advantage is colour. The COSMO has more barrel versions than any other pen we offer. We do not list them here, because the palette changes and some colours are occasionally unavailable - the current choice is always in the calculator on this page.

Where the COSMO works best

  • Welcome sets - for new staff, visitors or training participants, alongside a notebook, badge or other company materials.
  • Conferences and training - a pen that stays with the participant along with their notes, and often stays in use long after the event.
  • Reception and office supply - one consistent model on the counter, in meeting rooms and at customer service desks.
  • A gift for a business contact - a metal pen looks more solid than a plastic giveaway, and a subtle engraving is not pushy.
  • Trade fairs and industry meetings - a practical item handed over during a conversation, matched by colour to your branding.

Because the COSMO comes in such a wide range of colours, it also works when you want to distinguish departments, branches or successive editions of an event by barrel colour alone, keeping the same engraving throughout.

YAG laser engraving - a mark that stays

We mark metal pens with precise YAG laser engraving. The laser removes the layer of lacquer or anodising from the surface and exposes the lighter metal beneath. No ink and no extra layer is applied, so there is nothing to rub off or peel away: the mark lasts as long as the pen.

One consequence of the technique: engraving is single-colour. The laser does not print colour, it exposes metal, so even a multi-colour logo comes out in one tone. On darker barrels the contrast is stronger and the mark stands out at once; on light and silver models the effect is quieter and more subtle. If you want the engraving to be strongly visible, a darker barrel is the safer choice.

It is also worth not overdoing detail in the artwork. Very fine lines, soft shadows and tonal transitions make little sense here, since the engraving stays single-colour. A simpler mark and reasonably large text usually look far better on a pen.

One side or two

In the calculator, under "Marking", you can choose "One-sided engraving" or "Two-sided engraving". For most orders one side is plenty: a company name, a logo or a web address fits the field without squeezing the design.

The two-sided version is worth taking if you want to split the information - a logo on one side, a web address, phone number or short slogan on the other. A pen on a desk turns either way, so a second engraving also improves the chance the message is seen. Two-sided engraving costs more; you will see the exact difference when you change the option in the calculator. With the order, simply say what should go on each side.

The engraving file and free design work

Already have artwork? Send it as a vector PDF prepared in black only. Everything black will be engraved; the rest is left alone. Convert text to curves so the typeface does not change when the file is opened. Do not use photographs or greyscale - single-colour engraving cannot reproduce halftones.

If you have no artwork, we will prepare it free of charge with an order placed with us. E-mail your logo, preferably in vector form, along with all the text that is to appear on the pen. Our designer will send a proof for approval, and production starts only once you accept the final version.

COSMO technical data

  • Material - metal, aluminium.
  • Dimensions - 135×10 mm, barrel diameter ø 10 mm.
  • Marking area - 65.0×6.0 mm.
  • Marking - YAG laser engraving, one or two sides.
  • Refill - replaceable, in a common size. A spare is easy to buy in any stationery shop.
  • Refill colour - blue as standard. Black or red can be ordered for a surcharge, but that option is not in the calculator. If you need a different colour, mention it with your order and we will confirm the terms.

Quantity and ordering

The minimum order is 100 pieces. The next steps in the calculator are 200, 300, 500, 1000 and 2000 pieces. Pens are ordered in multiples of 50: enter 220, for example, and the calculator rounds up to 250.

The price and estimated lead time appear in the calculator once you choose the quantity and the type of engraving. We count the lead time from your approval of the proof, not from the day the order is placed. If the pens have to be ready for a particular date, allow some margin - and with a fixed deadline, write to us beforehand to confirm it is feasible.

The first version of the design usually comes within 1-2 working days. Each later round of changes extends that stage by another working day. Production begins once you approve the design.

FAQ

COSMO metal pens - questions and answers

Need help? Contact us

What are the dimensions of the COSMO?

The COSMO measures 135×10 mm, with a barrel diameter of ø 10 mm. Those are the classic proportions of an office pen, so it sits well in the hand and feels neither too thin nor unnecessarily bulky. The barrel is metal - aluminium.

How large is the engraving area on the COSMO?

The marking area is 65.0×6.0 mm. A company name and a web address fit comfortably, and with a shorter name so does a simple logo alongside the text. You will see the exact layout on the proof we send for approval before production starts.

How does the COSMO differ from the COSMO SLIM?

The key difference is barrel diameter: ø 10 mm on the COSMO against ø 7 mm on the SLIM. That translates directly into the height of the engraving field - 65.0×6.0 mm on the COSMO, 65.0×4.0 mm on the SLIM. The length is the same, but on the classic COSMO the letters can be larger and a second, smaller line of text is easier to fit.

Does any model have a larger engraving area than the COSMO?

Yes. In this group the largest field is on the MOOI at 75.0×6.0 mm - 10 mm more in length. The TIKO and TESS take a different approach: instead of one field they offer two separate areas, 50.0×6.0 mm and 20.0×6.0 mm, so you can put a logo lower on the barrel and a web address above it.

What barrel colours are available?

The COSMO has the widest choice of colours of all our pens. We do not list them here, because the palette changes and some shades are occasionally unavailable. The current colours are always shown in the calculator on this page.

Can the refill be replaced?

Yes. The refill is replaceable and in a common size, so a new one is easy to buy in any stationery shop. When the ink runs out there is no need to throw the whole pen away - which makes sense with a metal barrel that can last a long time.

Can I order pens with a black or red refill?

We fit blue refills as standard. Black or red can be ordered for an additional charge, but that option is not in the calculator directly. If you need a different colour, say so when placing the order; we will check availability and confirm any surcharge before production starts.

Can the engraving be in colour?

No. YAG laser engraving applies no ink to the pen. The laser removes the top layer of lacquer or anodising and exposes the lighter metal beneath, so the mark is always single-colour - even if your original logo uses several colours.

Which barrel colour suits engraving best?

You will usually get the strongest contrast on darker barrels, where the light trace of exposed metal stands out clearly against the background. On light and silver barrels the engraving is quieter and more subtle. If you want the logo or text to be immediately visible, a darker colour is the safer choice.

Does the engraving wear off?

No. The mark is not a print or an additional layer on the surface of the pen. The laser removes part of the coating and exposes the metal, so the engraving becomes part of the barrel itself. Water will not wash it off, and carrying the pen in a pocket or bag will not rub it away.

One-sided or two-sided engraving - how do I choose?

In the calculator, under "Marking", you will find "One-sided engraving" and "Two-sided engraving". In most cases one side is entirely enough for a logo, company name or web address. Two-sided engraving makes sense if you want to split the information - a logo on one side, an address, phone number or slogan on the other. The two-sided version costs more, and you will see the difference as soon as you change the option in the calculator.

How should the engraving file be prepared?

Send a vector PDF prepared in black only. Everything black will be engraved. Convert text to curves so the typeface does not change when the file is opened. Do not use photographs or greyscale elements - single-colour engraving cannot reproduce halftones.

I have no artwork ready - what then?

We will prepare it free of charge with an order placed with us. E-mail your logo, preferably in vector form, along with all the text that is to appear on the pen. Our designer will lay it out within the available marking area and send a proof for approval. Production starts only once it is accepted.

How many pens do I have to order, and why can I not enter 220?

The minimum run is 100 pieces. The next steps in the calculator are 200, 300, 500, 1000 and 2000. Pens are ordered in multiples of 50, so entering 220 makes the calculator raise the quantity to the nearest full multiple - 250 pieces.

When does the lead time start?

The lead time appears in the calculator once you choose the quantity and the type of marking. We count it from your approval of the proof, not from the day the order is placed. If the pens have to be ready for a particular date, order well in advance; with a very tight deadline, write to us beforehand to confirm it can be done.

My logo only exists as a JPG or PNG. Can it be engraved?

Engraving needs vector artwork, so a logo available only as a JPG or PNG has to be redrawn first. We can do that, but it is a paid service quoted individually - the cost depends mainly on how complex the mark is. Afterwards you get the logo in vector formats, which can be scaled freely without loss of quality and used on other materials too. Laying out the logo and text on the pen itself remains free of charge. It is also worth looking at the detail: the engraving goes onto a strip a few millimetres high, so very fine lines, small type and tiny details can merge once scaled down. Simplifying a logo slightly often gives a much better result than trying to keep every detail.

My logo is vertical, with the name under the symbol. How will it come out on a pen?

With that arrangement it is worth checking legibility before ordering. The engraving field on a pen is long but only a few millimetres high. If the logo consists of a symbol, a company name and an additional line stacked one above another, every element becomes very small once scaled down - and small text suffers first. A horizontal logo makes far better use of the available shape. If your brand book has such a version, send that one. If not, our designer can build a horizontal arrangement from the same elements, or suggest what to leave out so the whole stays legible. You will get a proof for approval before production in any case, so you will see the result before engraving begins.
