Digipack 8P (three-fold) - The 8P digipak is a three-fold card pack for a disc that forms four panels when folded. It is the fullest variant in the whole digipak family and the one that gives the most room for graphics, texts, photographs and additional information about the release. All the configuration options are set directly in the calculator.

8P digipak - four panels for a rich release

The 8P digipak is a card disc pack in a three-fold version. Unfolded it gives four panels printed across their whole surface; closed, it keeps compact, classic proportions. The disc sits in a plastic tray glued into the board, so the packaging becomes an integral part of the whole release.

It is the fullest form of digipak in our range, and its main advantage is simply surface. Four panels let you lay out the cover, lyrics, project description, photographs, credits and other information without cramming everything into a small area.

Where the name 8P comes from

The figure before the letter P is the number of printed board surfaces, not the number of discs the pack holds.

An 8P digipak has eight sides: four outer and four inner. That gives four panels joined by three fold lines, hence the term "three-fold".

For comparison, a digipack 4P has two panels and one fold, while a digipack 6P has three panels and two folds. The number of discs is chosen separately under "Type" in the calculator.

When four panels make sense

An 8P digipak is worth choosing when the packaging has to carry more than the cover and a basic track list. It can be used for, among other things:

  • music albums with fuller artwork, lyrics, line-up and photographs,
  • special, collector's and anniversary editions,
  • extensive training material with a course programme and module descriptions,
  • company presentations, portfolios and institutional releases.

If the design comes down to a cover and a short track list, a simpler digipak is usually enough.

Type - construction of the pack

The "Type" option defines the build of the digipak and the number of discs it can hold.

  • Standard - the version for one disc. The tray takes one panel and the other three are left for graphics and text. This is the most frequently chosen construction for an 8P digipak.
  • For 2 discs - a construction with two trays for double releases. Two panels still stay free for text and graphics.
  • For 3 discs - three trays, one on each of three panels. A variant for courses split into modules, training material and multi-disc releases. One free panel and the space around the trays are then left for graphics and text.
  • For 4 discs - a tray on each of the four panels. The most capacious construction in this format, meant for sets, compilations and archives. Content is then arranged around the trays, so it is worth planning it sparingly.

Composition of the spread - it matters especially here

With four panels it is easy to fall into the trap of designing each one as a separate page. An 8P digipak is better treated as a fold-out folder. On opening, the viewer sees a wide surface, so graphics and text should form a considered whole.

Before starting, it is worth settling three things: what will be visible at each stage of unfolding, which panel the tray will sit on, and how to divide the content across the remaining surfaces.

The panel with the tray is largely covered by the disc. It is therefore not the best place for long text or important information. With this kind of pack it pays to use the space deliberately, because space is exactly what the 8P version offers.

Finishing

The printed board can be laminated. The film protects the surface and at the same time affects the look and feel of the finished release.

  • Gloss film - emphasises colours and gives the surface a shine. It looks good with photographs and intense graphics. A classic finish, often seen on music releases.
  • Matt film - gives a calmer, more restrained surface and limits reflections. It is often chosen for dark covers and designs with more text, because a matt surface is more comfortable to read.
  • Soft Touch velvet film - a matt finish that feels like fine suede. It gives a more refined effect, so it often appears on collector's and anniversary editions.

Tray and printing of the inner spine

The tray is a plastic element glued into the board that holds the disc in place. Three variants are available:

  • clear - the printed board under the disc shows through the plastic, so the interior graphics stay part of the whole composition,
  • black - contrasts strongly with the background and displays the disc clearly,
  • for a USB card, clear - holds a credit-card-format USB drive instead of a disc.

A separate option is printing of the inner spine, meaning the narrow strips of board along the fold lines. Without printing, white strips remain there.

With an 8P digipak this matters more than with simpler constructions, because there are three folds. With a light interior the white lines can be almost invisible. But if the design is dark or intensely coloured, three light strips can clearly divide the graphics into four parts.

If the interior has been designed as one continuous image, inner spine printing is well worth including.

Assembly and shrink-wrapping of finished sets

Assembly means the finished set is prepared on our side.

Without assembly you receive the packs alone and put the discs in yourself. With disc assembly we place the media in the trays. On larger runs, and especially in the double-disc variant, that saves a good deal of manual work.

Shrink-wrapping of finished sets means protecting the closed pack with sealed film. It protects the product during transport and storage, and the whole looks like a finished release ready for sale or further distribution.

Wrapping is done on assembled packs, so this option is tied to assembly.

How to prepare the print file

Prepare the artwork as a spread of four panels, that is the whole unfolded form of the pack. Do not prepare the individual panels as separate pages.

The basic requirements:

  • colour in CMYK, not RGB; automatic conversion can affect the final colour tone,
  • photographs at 300 dpi, and for fine elements preferably 600 dpi,
  • 3 mm bleed on every edge,
  • important elements at least 3 mm from the trim and fold lines,
  • a PDF file with fonts converted to outlines, or a flattened TIF in CMYK.

With an 8P digipak, pay particular attention to the three fold lines. Logos, titles and blocks of text should not fall exactly there. Once folded, the board works along the fold lines, so graphic elements placed on them can lose legibility and sharpness.

How to order

Runs start at 100 pieces and go up to 3000. The minimum quantity is therefore higher than for simpler constructions. The price for the chosen variant and the lead time are shown directly during pricing.

What does 8P mean in the name of a digipak?

How many discs does an 8P digipak hold?

From one to four, depending on the construction chosen.

The standard variant holds one disc. The "For 2 discs" construction has two trays and can be used for an album with bonus material, a compilation or a course split across two discs. The "For 3 discs" and "For 4 discs" variants are also available for multi-disc releases.

With two discs, two panels still stay free for graphics and text. The more trays, the less free surface - with four discs the content is arranged around them. You choose the right construction under "Type".

How does the 8P differ from the 4P and 6P versions?

The most important difference is the surface available for content and graphics.

A 4P digipak has two panels and one fold, so it is the simplest and most compact version. A 6P digipak has three panels, two folds and the widest choice of constructions.

An 8P digipak has four panels joined by three fold lines. It is the fullest form in the family, meant above all for releases where the board has to carry more than a cover and basic information.

What actually fits on four panels?

Four panels let you lay out practically the whole presentation of a release.

One can serve as the cover, another can hold lyrics or a description of the project, the next photographs from the session or shots related to the production, and the last the credits, line-up, acknowledgements, partner logos or contact details.

With training material you can use them to separate the course programme, module descriptions and information about the trainers.

Just remember that the panel with the tray is largely covered by the disc. It is not worth putting long text there, or information that should be visible straight away.

How should I plan graphics across four panels?

Best to treat the whole design as one spread rather than four independent pages.

An 8P digipak works a little like a fold-out folder. Each stage of opening reveals another part of the design, so it is worth planning in advance what the viewer sees first, where the tray will be and how the content moves between panels.

With so much surface you can achieve an interesting effect of wide, continuous graphics. You just have to remember the three fold positions and allow for them at the design stage.

How do the variants for 2, 3 and 4 discs differ?

In the number of trays and in how much surface is left for the design.

Each additional tray takes up one of the four panels. With two discs, two panels stay entirely free; with three, one; and with four there is a tray on every panel and the graphics are arranged around them.

It is worth thinking this through at the start of the project. The panel with the tray is largely covered by the disc, so it does not suit longer text or information that should be visible straight away.

Is a booklet needed at all with an 8P?

Not always. Four panels give enough surface that in many projects the texts, information about the release, photographs and credits can go directly on the board.

A booklet helps when there is really a lot of material, or when you want a separate booklet form that can be taken out and browsed.

Booklets and inserts are available from us as a separate product. The 8P digipak has no dedicated slot or pocket for a booklet - if you want that, look at the 4P, 6P or A5 digipak.

Which film should I choose for a design with a lot of text?

With lyrics, descriptions and larger blocks of content, matt film usually works well.

The surface reflects less light, so text reads more calmly and without strong glare. Fingerprints are also less visible on it.

Gloss film emphasises colours more strongly and presents photographs well, so it may be the better choice in a design built mainly on images.

What is Soft Touch velvet film?

Soft Touch is a film with a matt finish and a characteristic, delicate surface that feels like suede.

Visually it behaves much like classic matt film. Colours are more restrained and the surface does not reflect light strongly. The biggest difference is felt when you pick the pack up.

For that reason Soft Touch is often chosen for collector's and anniversary editions, and for presentations prepared for clients.

Clear tray or black tray?

A clear tray lets you see the printed board under the disc. The interior graphics therefore stay visible in that spot too, and no large area is cut off completely from the rest of the spread.

With an 8P digipak this can matter especially, because the whole construction allows wide, coherent compositions.

A black tray creates strong contrast and displays the disc clearly. It can be a good choice when the board underneath is an even colour anyway.

What is the USB card tray for?

It is a clear tray meant for a credit-card-format USB drive instead of a traditional disc.

Material can then be handed over on USB media while keeping the form and look of a full disc release.

This can be used for company material, presentations and training aimed at people working on computers without optical drives. The four panels are still available as extensive graphic treatment.

Is inner spine printing worth it on an 8P?

With this construction it matters more than with 4P and 6P digipaks, because there are three fold lines.

If the inner spines are left unprinted, three white strips at regular intervals may be visible on the unfolded board.

With light graphics this is usually not a problem. With a black, navy or intensely coloured interior, white lines can divide the design sharply, especially if the graphics were planned as one wide image.

In that case inner spine printing is worth choosing.

What do assembly and shrink-wrapping of sets cover?

Assembly means the finished sets are prepared on our side.

Without assembly you receive the packs alone and put the discs in yourself. With disc assembly we place the media in the trays. On larger runs, and especially in the double-disc variant, that saves a lot of manual work.

Wrapping means protecting the finished, closed pack with sealed film. It protects the release during transport and storage, keeps dust out and gives the whole the look of a product ready for sale.

Wrapping is done on the assembled set.

What runs can I order and where do I see the price?

The available runs are 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 pieces.

The minimum run is higher than for simpler digipaks, because the 8P is the fullest construction in this family.

You choose the run in the calculator together with the construction type, finishing, tray, inner spine printing, assembly and wrapping.

The price and lead time are shown directly when the chosen configuration is priced.

How do I prepare the artwork file for print?

Prepare the artwork as a spread of all four panels, that is the full unfolded form of the digipak. Do not prepare the panels as separate pages.

Work in CMYK, not RGB. Automatic conversion can affect colour tone.

Prepare photographs at 300 dpi, and for fine elements 600 dpi is better. Add 3 mm bleed on every edge. Keep important texts, logos and other key elements at least 3 mm from the trim and fold lines.

Send the finished artwork as a PDF with fonts converted to outlines, or a flattened TIF in CMYK.

Remember that an 8P digipak has three fold lines. Logos, titles and important texts should not fall exactly on them.
