DVD discs - printing and copying - DVDs with custom printing can be ordered as blank discs for you to write yourself, or as finished discs with the material already recorded. Standard, Medical and branded discs are available, along with three printing technologies: digital UV, offset and screen printing in Pantone colours.
DVDs - printing and data duplication
DVD works when the material is too large for an ordinary CD. That can be a film, a video course, a large set of photographs, technical documentation or extensive training material.
We can prepare the discs with printing only, or additionally write the data you supply. You choose the type of disc, duplication, printing technology and run in the calculator. The price and lead time appear with the quote.
Capacity, DVD-ROM and DVD-Video
A standard single-layer disc holds up to 4,7 GB of data, and a dual-layer one up to 8,5 GB. That is around seven times more than a CD.
So DVD is a good choice for material such as a longer film, a complete set of photographs from a session, a larger course or documentation containing many files. If the material is smaller, look also at CD printing and duplication. The ordering rules are similar; what changes is mainly the capacity of the disc.
It is also worth distinguishing two ways of preparing the content.
DVD-ROM is an ordinary data disc. It holds files and folders that you open on a computer.
DVD-Video has a specially prepared VIDEO_TS directory structure, recognised by classic set-top DVD players and devices with a suitable drive.
If you save a film to the disc as an ordinary file, without preparing the DVD-Video structure, it may work fine on a computer, but not every player connected to a television will recognise it. If the disc is to be used in such a device, the material should be mastered properly as DVD-Video. It is worth noting that with your order too.
Where printed DVDs work best
DVDs are used for, among other things:
- films and video material, such as event coverage, promotional and corporate films,
- training and e-learning, including video courses and packages for participants,
- larger archives of photographs, project files and handover documentation,
- presentations, catalogues and sales material that work without internet access,
- imaging examinations issued to patients by medical facilities.
Disc - three variants
Three groups of disc are available.
DVDs - standard discs for company material, training, archive copies, presentations and releases handed out at events.
Medical DVDs - discs intended mainly for recording imaging examinations in medical facilities.
HP, Maxell and Verbatim DVDs - branded discs chosen when repeatable quality of the disc itself and good compatibility with various playback equipment particularly matter.
Medical DVDs - imaging examinations
Examinations such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance can consist of hundreds of images. A single examination can take up several hundred megabytes, and in more extensive cases even several gigabytes.
In such situations a CD often turns out to be too small, and writing the whole examination to one DVD is more convenient.
For hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres we can prepare discs with custom printing, for example the facility's logo and contact details along with space for patient information and the examination date.
Facilities usually write the data to Medical discs themselves.
Data duplication - two options
In the calculator you also choose whether the discs should be written.
No, discs for you to write yourself - you receive blank discs with the printing done. You write the data later yourself.
This variant is often chosen by medical facilities, companies handling confidential information, and customers who record new material on an ongoing basis.
Yes, data duplication - you send us the finished material and we write it to the whole run.
We duplicate on industrial duplicators that write many discs at once. We use low writing speeds, and every finished copy is additionally verified against the source material.
You can send material for writing as:
- a master disc sent by post or courier,
- a disc image sent by FTP in NRG, ISO or DDP 2.0 format.
Include an MD5 checksum with the image; it lets us check that the file arrived unchanged and complete.
Type of printing - three technologies
On DVDs we can print with digital UV, offset or screen printing.
Digital UV
- A white base and full CMYK colour.
- Inks cured with UV light.
- Good coverage and a slightly glossy surface.
- Precise reproduction of fine elements and screen.
- No need for printing forms, so the technology suits very small runs as well.
Digital UV is the versatile solution for photographs, multi-colour graphics and shorter series.
Offset
- A white base applied by screen printing, then full CMYK printing.
- Very good reproduction of photographs, gradients and complex graphics.
- On large even areas slight colour drift, that is minor unevenness of coverage, can appear.
Offset works best on larger runs and designs with many photographs and tonal transitions.
Screen printing, 1-2 colours and 3-5 colours
- Printing with UV-cured Pantone inks.
- The number of colours is matched to the particular design.
- Large even areas are smooth and evenly covered.
- Sharp edges and fine text come out well.
Screen printing is worth choosing particularly when the design rests on a few flat colours, or when a corporate colour has to match a specific Pantone number.
Pantone colours are available only in screen printing. Digital UV and offset work in CMYK.
Why a white base on a silver disc
The standard surface of a DVD is silver. If colour printing were applied directly to such a substrate, the silver would affect how it looks. Colours would become darker and could take on a metallic cast.
A white base separates the actual graphics from the silver disc. Colours are therefore much closer to the design, and light areas do not get lost in the gloss of the surface.
Runs and the point of switching to replication
The minimum run depends on the printing technology.
Digital UV is available from 10 pieces. The further steps are:
10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 1000 pieces.
Offset and screen printing start at 100 pieces. The available steps are:
100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 pieces.
Not every combination of disc type, data duplication and printing technology is available. The calculator automatically shows only variants that can be produced correctly.
On large, repeated runs it is also worth comparing duplication with DVD replication.
Replication means producing discs from a glass master. The data is written physically into the structure of the disc rather than recorded onto a ready-made writable layer. Discs prepared this way are more durable and usually work better with older equipment.
Preparing the master involves an extra cost, but the larger the run, the smaller its share in the price of a single copy.
Preparing the print file
Prepare the disc print artwork to the following rules:
- working area: 120×120 mm,
- prepare the design as a full square, without cutting out the shape of the disc and without marking the central hole,
- the graphics should fill the whole working area. We will trim it on our side so that no white rim appears at the edge,
- colour in CMYK, not RGB,
- if you supply the file in RGB it will be converted automatically to CMYK, which can affect the colours,
- if you use a colour profile, for disc printing use Coated FOGRA27,
- prepare photographs at 300 dpi,
- fine elements and thin lines are best left as vectors; if they are raster, prepare them at 600 dpi,
- a PDF file with fonts converted to outlines, or a flattened TIF in CMYK with LZW compression,
- black texts: 100% K,
- black solids: 25% C, 25% M, 25% Y, 100% K,
- do not place fine elements right at the edge.

Packaging, assembly and how to order
A finished DVD can be put together with the packaging of your choice.
For simple sets and shipping, card sleeves are suitable. If the whole is to look more like a full release, you can choose a digipack. Ecopaks, plastic cases and booklets and inserts placed inside the packaging are also available.
Assembly, that is putting the discs into the packaging ordered, can be done on our side.
The ordering process is simple: you set the parameters in the calculator, check the price and lead time, place the order, and then send the print artwork and the material to be written.
Before production starts we send a preview of the artwork for approval.

I am ordering printed DVDs - what does the data duplication option change?
With printing only, you receive blank DVDs with finished graphics on the surface. You write the content later yourself.
If you choose data duplication, you send us the material and we write it to all the discs on the order.
You then receive discs ready to hand out or ship.
The type of disc and the printing technology are chosen the same way regardless of whether we duplicate the data on our side.
How much data fits on one DVD?
A single-layer disc holds up to 4,7 GB, and a dual-layer one up to 8,5 GB.
That is around seven times more than a standard CD, so DVD works well for films, large collections of photographs, training courses and extensive documentation.
Before ordering it is worth checking the size of the whole folder of material. If it exceeds the capacity of one disc, the data can be split across several discs or a dual-layer version used.
Will the disc work in a set-top DVD player?
Yes, if the material was prepared in the DVD-Video standard and contains the right VIDEO_TS directory structure.
A film saved to the disc as an ordinary file in DVD-ROM format will work on a computer, but a classic player connected to a television will not always recognise it.
If the disc is to be used in a set-top DVD player, note that with your order and prepare the material as DVD-Video.
What is the minimum run for printed DVDs?
Digital UV is available from as few as 10 pieces. The further steps are 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 1000 pieces.
Offset and screen printing start at 100 pieces. The next runs are 200, 300, 400, 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 pieces.
The difference comes from the technology. Offset and screen printing need printing forms prepared, so they pay off from a larger number of pieces.

Which printing technology should I choose?
Digital UV is the most versatile. It reproduces detail well, has strong coverage and can be used on very small runs.
Offset is worth choosing for larger series and designs with many photographs, gradients and more complex colour.
Screen printing suits designs based on even areas of colour, and cases where a particular brand colour has to be produced to a Pantone number.
The calculator will show which technologies can be used with the disc you have chosen.
Can I order printing in a Pantone colour?
Yes, but only in screen printing.
In that technology the ink is prepared for a specific number from the Pantone swatch book. You can choose the 1-2 colour or the 3-5 colour variant, depending on how many colours the design contains.
Digital UV and offset use CMYK. A corporate colour is therefore reproduced there by a mix of four inks rather than printed as a separate Pantone colour.
Why is a white base used on a disc?
A DVD has a silver surface that affects the colours of the print.
If the graphics were printed directly onto that silver background, colours would become darker and could take on a metallic character.
A white base creates a neutral layer between the disc and the actual print. Colour is therefore far more predictable.
What are Medical DVDs?
They are discs intended for recording imaging examinations such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance or X-ray.
They are ordered mainly by hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres.
Imaging examinations can take up a lot of space, so the capacity of a CD often turns out to be insufficient and DVD is the more convenient disc.
When should I choose a branded HP, Maxell or Verbatim disc?
When repeatable quality of the discs themselves and their compatibility with various devices particularly matter.
That is especially relevant when the run goes out to many recipients and you have no influence over which drive the disc will later be used in.
Branded discs are also often chosen for material that is to stay with the recipient for longer - project documentation, training courses or releases.
How do I send material to be written?
You can send a physical master disc by post or courier, or send a disc image by FTP.
We accept images in NRG, ISO and DDP 2.0 formats.
Include an MD5 checksum with the file. It lets us check that the material arrived complete and was not damaged during transmission.
Is every written disc checked?
Yes.
We duplicate on industrial duplicators and use low writing speeds.
After writing, every disc goes through verification, during which the system compares its contents with the source material.
Copies that do not pass the check correctly do not go into the finished run.
How do I prepare the print file?
Prepare the artwork as a 120×120 mm square, without marking the outline of the disc or the central hole.
The background should fill the whole working area, so that no white edge appears after trimming.
Work in CMYK. Prepare photographs at 300 dpi, and fine elements preferably at 600 dpi or as vectors.
Send the file as a PDF with fonts converted to outlines, or as a TIF in CMYK, flattened to one layer and saved with LZW compression.
If you do not have finished artwork, write to us and describe what should appear on the disc.
When is replication a better choice than duplication?
On large, repeated runs it is worth comparing the two methods.
Duplication means writing data onto a ready-made disc. In replication the disc is produced from a glass master and the data sits physically in the structure of the disc.
Such a disc is more durable and usually works better with older equipment.
Preparing the master has a cost, but with a larger number of pieces that cost is spread across the whole run and replication starts to be more economical.
Can you pack the discs and prepare them for shipping?
Yes.
Card sleeves, digipaks in various versions, ecopaks, plastic cases and booklets and inserts for the inside are all available.
We can also handle assembly, that is putting the discs into the packaging chosen and preparing finished sets.
If you order the disc and the packaging at the same time, it is worth planning both designs together, so that the print on the disc and the packaging graphics form a coherent whole.
Do I have to hold rights to the material you write to the discs?
Yes. Rights to the material sent for writing and to the graphics on the disc are the customer's responsibility.
That covers recordings, films, photographs, fonts, trademarks, logos and other elements used in the design.
By placing an order you confirm that you may use the material supplied in the given run and for the given purpose.
If you have doubts about rights to a specific element, it is best to clear them up before production starts.
