Promotional pens - two families, two ways of marking

A branded pen stays in use for months, not for one evening. That is why our range splits into two clearly different families - and the way they are marked is what separates them.

Metal pens are marked by laser engraving. The beam lifts the top layer from the aluminium barrel and exposes the lighter metal underneath. The mark does not sit on the surface, it is part of the barrel: it cannot rub off or peel in normal everyday use. There is one trade-off - engraving is always single-tone, because its colour is decided by the exposed metal rather than by the colours in your logo.

Plastic pens are marked with full-colour UV digital printing. Here the logo appears in the colours it was designed in: tonal transitions, shading, gradients, even photographs. The ink cures under UV light during printing, so the result stands up to water and sunlight and needs no extra varnish.

Which one to choose

  • Metal with engraving - when the pen is a small gift for a client or partner, needs to look smart and to last for years. The mark is discreet and does not rub off in normal everyday use.
  • Plastic with UV printing - when faithful brand colours matter, or your logo is multi-coloured and loses its point once reduced to a single flat shape.
  • Stylus versions (touch pens) - when the people receiving them work on tablets, terminals and phones. Same pen, with a soft touchscreen tip - depending on the model it sits at the opposite end of the barrel or next to the writing tip.

You choose body colours in the calculator on each model's page. We do not list them in the descriptions, because availability can change and the calculator is always current.

Marking on one side or two

On most models you choose in the calculator whether we mark one side of the barrel or both. The EVE model is listed with single-sided printing only. One is enough when you want the logo alone, or the logo with a web address. Two make sense when you want to separate content - the company mark on one side, contact details or an event name on the other. The surcharge for the second side appears as soon as you switch the option.

The marking area on a pen is always a narrow strip. Horizontal versions of a logo, spread out sideways, work best on it, while stacked marks have to be reduced considerably to fit the height.

Artwork and free graphic design

For engraving, the best starting point is vector artwork prepared in plain black: whatever is black gets engraved. For UV printing, a colour file in CMYK. In both cases convert text to curves and prepare the design at 1:1 scale.

No artwork ready? We will prepare the design free of charge for orders we produce. Just email us your logo and the wording that should appear on the pen. We send back a proof for approval, and only once you confirm it does the order go into production - revisions at that stage are a normal part of the job.

One honest note: engraving needs vector artwork. If your logo exists only as an image file (jpg, png), it has to be redrawn as vector first - a separate, chargeable service that we quote individually. UV printing does not have that problem, because a full-colour press handles a good-quality raster file.

Quantities and lead time

Orders start at 100 pieces, and quantities go in multiples of 50. Further price points are 200, 300, 500, 1000 and 2000 pieces - the larger the run, the lower the unit price. The calculator on each model's page prices your chosen quantity.

We count the lead time from the start of production, not from the moment you place the order. Production starts once we have everything: your approval of the proof and a recorded payment. There is no express service on pens, so if they are needed for a specific event, order with time to spare.

Lead time

Typically 5-7 working days from the start of production, depending on the product. The calculator on the product page shows the exact lead time for the options you pick - finishing or personalisation can extend it. Production starts once we have everything: a correct file, your approval of the proof where required, the payment recorded, and for disc replication and duplication the source material delivered.

Engraving or printing - which should I choose?

It depends on whether colour or durability matters more. Engraving is burned into metal: the mark becomes part of the barrel, so it cannot rub off or peel, but it is always single-tone - it comes out in the colour of the exposed metal. UV printing goes onto plastic in full colour, so your logo appears in your brand colours, gradients and shading included. For a small gift meant to last years, choose metal with engraving. For faithful brand colours, choose plastic with printing.

What is the minimum order?

100 pieces, on every model. Quantities are ordered in multiples of 50 - if you type a number in between, the calculator rounds it up to the nearest fifty. Further price points are 200, 300, 500, 1000 and 2000 pieces.

Will you prepare the artwork if all I have is a logo?

Yes, we prepare the design free of charge for orders we produce. Email us your logo and the wording that should appear on the pen; our designer will lay it out and send you a proof to approve. Production starts only once you confirm it. The one case that carries a charge is engraving from a logo supplied as an image file, which has to be redrawn as vector artwork first.

Can the logo go on both sides?

On most models, yes - in the calculator you choose single- or double-sided marking, and the surcharge appears as soon as you switch. Two sides help when you want to separate content: the logo on one, a web address or event name on the other. The exception is the EVE model, which is listed with single-sided printing only.

My logo is stacked vertically. Is that a problem?

It is worth thinking through before you order. The marking area on a pen is a narrow strip a few millimetres tall. A stacked logo, with the mark and strapline one above the other, has to fit into that height as a whole, so everything ends up very small and fine text stops being legible. A horizontal version sits on the strip far more naturally. If your brand guidelines include one, send us that.
