The first day in a new place is full of small uncertainties: where to sit, who to ask, what to actually do for the first few hours. A welcome pack will not solve that for anyone, but it puts something concrete in their hands and shows that somebody prepared for their arrival. The same idea works for a client starting a longer piece of work with you.

What usually goes inside

The pack does not need to be big. It matters more that every item has a reason to be there.

• A notebook and a pen - the simplest things, used from the first hour onwards.
• A memory stick with documents - policies, instructions and introductory material in one place, with no digging through an inbox.
• A short guide - who does what, where the kitchen is, how the first week runs.
• Something from the team - a mug, a signed card or a small item connected to what the company does.
• The packaging - a box holds it all together and makes the pack feel like a gift rather than a pile of things.

The same idea for clients

Welcome packs work well outside the HR department too. A client starting a longer collaboration receives everything in one box: how the work will run, who to contact, sometimes samples or a drive with files. Keep the look consistent - the same colours, the same logo, a similar finish throughout. Packs are usually made in small numbers, so it is easy to refine the details and swap out anything that did not work.

If you are putting one together for the first time, start by writing down what a new person needs to know in their first week. Choose the items afterwards, and nothing unnecessary will end up in the box.
