Black seems like the simplest colour in the world - it is just black and that is it. In print it gets more interesting. The same word "black" can mean several completely different ink recipes in a file, and choosing the wrong one can make thin text split into a few colours or leave a large background looking dirty and sticky.
You do not need to be a designer to grasp this. It is enough to know that one black suits a fine caption and another suits a huge dark area covering a whole page. Below we explain in plain terms what kinds of black exist, when to use which, and how to set them in your file so the print comes out clean.
- Do thin text and fine lines in pure text black - 100% K (black ink only).
- Large dark backgrounds gain depth when you add a bit of colour - this is called rich black.
- Registration black (all inks at 100%) is only for print registration marks - never for text or backgrounds.
- Too much ink at once risks smudging and sticking - keep to a sensible ink coverage limit.
- Paper matters too: glossy renders a deeper black than matte or absorbent stock.

Where black comes from in print
Most promotional materials are printed in four inks: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. In short, CMYK. The black ink is marked with the letter K, and it is responsible for most of what you see as dark.
Here is the crux of the matter. You can build black in two ways. Either you use black ink alone (100% K, zero of the rest), or you add a bit of cyan, magenta and yellow to the black. The first option is a pure, "lean" black. The second is rich black, darker and fuller. Neither is better "overall" - each has its place.
Text black: 100% K for fine elements
For text, thin lines, small icons and anything with sharp, narrow edges, use pure black made from black ink alone - 100% K, with the other colours at zero. Why does this matter so much?
Imagine your letter is built from four separate layers of ink: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The machine lays them down one after another and has to hit exactly the same spot. On a large patch, a tiny shift makes no difference. But on a thin caption a few millimetres tall, even a hair of misalignment reveals a coloured outline peeking from under the black letter - a pink or blue smear on the edge. This effect is caused by imprecise colour registration.
When text is pure 100% K, only one ink prints it. There is nothing to shift relative to anything else - the letter is sharp and even regardless of the machine's small movements. That is why the golden rule is: small black text always on a single ink.
If your project has black text, check its colour in your graphics program. It should show C:0 M:0 Y:0 K:100. If you see values on the other letters (for example C:75 M:68 Y:67 K:90 - a black converted from RGB rather than pure black), switch the text to pure black. Fine type will come out much cleaner.
Rich black: large backgrounds with character
Now the opposite case. You have a huge black background across a whole flyer, a brochure cover or a poster. If you print it in pure 100% K, it often comes out slightly greyish, matte, as if "dusty". Black ink alone is not always enough to make a large area look deep and saturated.
The solution is rich black. You add a bit of the other colours to the black, which makes the background darker and fuller. A tried and safe recipe is, for example, C:40 M:30 Y:30 K:100. You can vary the values slightly, but this proportion gives a deep, neutral black without drifting into blue or brown.
Use rich black deliberately and only for large areas. For fine text in the same project, still use pure 100% K - otherwise we are back to the coloured outline problem. In practice it is often the case that one background is in rich black, while the captions on or beside it are in pure black.
Registration black: a trap to avoid
There is one more black that tempts you, because in the program it looks like the "blackest of blacks". That is registration black - all four inks at 100% (C:100 M:100 Y:100 K:100). It sounds logical: if more ink means darker, then the maximum of each should give perfect black. In reality, it is one of the classic file-prep mistakes.
This black has a completely different job. "Registration" means the marks the machine uses to line up all the inks. Registration colour exists so that those small crosses and targets in the sheet margin are visible in all four inks at once. It is never meant for printing the actual artwork.
If you use it for text or a background, a monstrous amount of ink hits the paper - four full layers at once. The result is smudging, sheets sticking together, long drying times and often ink offsetting onto the neighbouring page. Remember it simply: registration black only for marks, never for artwork.
How much ink is too much
If adding colours gives depth, why not push everything to the maximum? Because paper has its limit. The sum of all inks in one spot is the so-called total ink coverage (TAC or TIL - Total Area Coverage / Total Ink Limit). At 100% of each of the four inks the sum is 400%, and that is far too much.
In practice, for most papers a safe limit is around 300%. Our example rich black C:40 M:30 Y:30 K:100 adds up to 200% - so it is comfortably within range and prints cleanly. When there is too much ink, the paper cannot absorb it in time, the print takes long to dry, and during folding it can smudge or stick.

Paper and the depth of black
The same black looks different on two different papers, and it is worth knowing this before you settle the design.
How the stock changes black
- Glossy (coated) paper - reflects light and makes black look deeper and more intense. Great when you want a strong, contrasting effect.
- Matte paper - scatters light, so black comes out a touch calmer and more subdued. Elegant, but dark backgrounds appear minimally lighter than on gloss.
- Uncoated, absorbent paper (offset, eco) - draws ink deeper into its structure, which makes black the least intense and slightly greyish. This is where rich black helps the most.
That is why the choice of black goes hand in hand with the choice of paper. If you plan large dark backgrounds on absorbent, matte paper, it is all the more worth reaching for rich black. You will find more on choosing stock in our materials and papers section.
How to set this up in your file - a simple plan
You do not need to memorise the theory. It is enough to follow a few steps every time black appears in your project.
- Select all black text and thin lines - set their colour to C:0 M:0 Y:0 K:100. This is your default black for fine elements.
- Large dark backgrounds - if they are meant to be truly deep, set rich black, for example C:40 M:30 Y:30 K:100.
- Check that registration colour is nowhere in use - text and backgrounds should not contain the values 100/100/100/100. Leave that colour solely to the printer's automatic marks.
- Watch the ink limit - do not combine high values of all colours. Keep to a sensible total coverage, and the print will dry and come out clean.
