A disc with a good print looks like a finished product rather than a raw carrier with a sticker. The difference is visible at first glance - the colour goes straight into the surface of the disc, it does not peel off or flake. To achieve that effect, though, you need to understand how printing on a disc differs from ordinary printing on paper. The substrate is different, the shape of the field is different and the colour profile is different. This post walks through all of these differences step by step.

Why print instead of a sticker
The simplest way to label a disc is a self-adhesive sticker. It tempts with ease, but in practice it causes more trouble than it is worth. A sticker eventually lifts at the edges, can shift, and when applied unevenly it disturbs the balance of the disc as it spins in the drive. The visual effect falls short too - you can see the edge of the film and the difference in texture.
Printing works differently. The colour lands straight onto the prepared, absorbent surface of the disc and becomes part of it. There is no edge to peel, no extra layer that changes the weight of the disc. The surface stays smooth and the design looks factory-made. For a music release, training material or a company presentation, that is the difference between a polished product and a makeshift job.
Print methods - screen and digital
A few technologies are used on discs - with us you can choose digital UV printing, offset, or screen printing in a 1-2 or 3-5 colour version. Each has its own character and suits different applications - it is worth knowing both before you decide which way to go on a given project.
Screen printing
Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh with a cut-out pattern, separately for each colour. The ink lays down in a thick, opaque layer, so the colours are saturated and strong, and a white base is truly white. It is a method that performs great on larger runs and on designs built from a few clear, flat colours - logos, lettering, solid backgrounds. The simpler the palette, the better screen printing holds up.
Digital (inkjet) printing
Digital UV printing applies the image drop by drop and cures it with UV light, without the need to prepare separate screens. Thanks to that, it handles smooth tonal transitions, photographs and rich, multicolour graphics. It works well on smaller runs and designs where photorealism and fine detail matter. If a disc cover carries a photo with delicate shadows, this is the route that reproduces them most faithfully.
You choose the print method to fit the design, not the other way around - flat colours like screen printing, photographs like digital printing.
Full coverage or a field for data
The next decision concerns how much of the disc surface the graphics will occupy. You have two sensible routes and both have their place.
Full coverage means the print fills the entire available area of the disc - from the inner ring right up to the edge. This looks the most striking and professional, because the disc becomes a coherent, designed whole. It is the natural choice for releases, gifts and anything meant to make a good impression right in the hand.
The second option is to leave a light, unprinted field - most often a white strip or an area with delicate lines. Such a fragment lets you add something by hand later: a title, a recording date, a copy number. It works well for archive discs, working copies and anywhere the content differs for each disc. It is a practical solution that combines a neat print with the option of a later note.
If you want to leave room for a handwritten note, plan it into the design from the start as a deliberate, light element of the composition. A field added at the last moment usually looks like a hole in the graphics rather than an intended part of the layout.
The print area - a ring shape
Here comes the biggest difference from printing on paper. A disc is not a full circle to be printed - in the middle it has a hole and a transparent mounting ring on which colour holds poorly. The print area therefore has the shape of a ring, described by two values: the inner diameter and the outer diameter.
The outer diameter sets how close to the edge of the disc the graphics reach. The inner diameter determines where the print begins around the hole - and it is the one that can be tricky. If we start printing too close to the centre, the colour lands on an area that does not absorb ink like the rest of the disc, and the result will be uneven. That is why the template precisely describes these boundaries - sticking to them is the basis of a good print.
It is also worth knowing that discs come with different surface finishes for printing. With us the choice is not the surface finish but the carrier itself - CD, CD Medical, CD HP/Maxell/Verbatim or Vinyl CD - and that is what affects how the colours behave. The choice of substrate affects how the colours behave - so it pays to settle it at the start rather than after designing the graphics.
File preparation - template, bleed, resolution
A good file for disc printing rests on three pillars. Each of them guards a different aspect, but only together do they give a print consistent with the design.
- Template - design on a ready disc template that has the ring diameters and the hole drawn in. It shows you at once where the safe area ends and where the zone you had better not touch begins.
- Bleed - if the graphics are meant to reach the very edge of the disc, extend them a touch beyond the cutting line of the print area. This allowance means that with a minimal shift no light strip of bare disc appears at the edge.
- Resolution - graphics at print resolution, not screen resolution. An image that looks good on a monitor can turn soft and blurry on a disc. Prepare photos with a quality reserve so the details stay sharp.
On top of that comes something obvious that is easy to forget: keep text and important elements away from the hole and from the outer edge, safely in the middle of the ring. Lettering running too close to the rim risks being trimmed. Before you send the design, switch off the template layer for a moment and look at the graphics alone. If the composition looks good without the guide lines, it means the elements sit where they should, rather than leaning on makeshift edges.
Colour profile for discs - Coated Fogra 27
This is the point that surprises most often. For printing on coated paper the standard is the Coated Fogra 39 profile - and many people instinctively apply it everywhere. For discs, however, the right profile is Coated Fogra 27, matched to the specifics of the disc substrate. The surface of a disc takes and reflects ink differently than paper, so the same colour saved with two profiles can look different after printing.
In practice this means one thing: prepare a design for disc printing in CMYK with the Coated Fogra 27 profile, rather than copying the settings from a paper project. It is a small change in the export window that really affects whether the saturation and shades match what you saw on screen. How the print connects with the packaging
The print on the disc is one piece of the puzzle - the other is the packaging in which the disc reaches the recipient. The best effect comes from a consistent theme: the same colours, the same typography and the same graphic style on the disc and its surroundings. Then the whole thing looks like a considered product rather than a set of random elements.
The choice of packaging depends on how the disc is meant to be received. A cardboard digipack with a full print builds the impression of an elegant, complete release, while a simple sleeve favours lightness and space saving.
