A flat, printed sheet is only half the story. What happens to it after printing can turn an ordinary sheet into a ticket with a tear-off stub, an elegant folder or a leaflet folded like an accordion. Three treatments make the biggest difference here: perforation, creasing and folding. They sound technical, but their point is very practical - they are ways to make print actually do something, rather than just look nice.
They are worth knowing even if you never operate the machine yourself. When you understand what these treatments give you, it is easier to design a material that does not crack in the wrong place, tears off comfortably or folds exactly where you want. Below we explain the differences between them and how to think about the lines already at the design stage.
- Perforation is a line of small cuts - it makes it easy to tear off a stub, coupon or ticket evenly.
- Creasing is a pressed groove for a fold - essential on thicker paper so it does not crack at the bend.
- Folding is the folding itself - in half, into a C, a Z, a window - and it is what turns a sheet into a folder or leaflet.

Perforation - a line that is easy to tear
Perforation is a row of small cuts or holes running along a line. It does not cut the paper all the way through - it leaves bridges that hold everything together, but weak enough that a simple fold and pull tears the stub off evenly. It is the simplest way to have a fixed part and a "take-away" part in one material. We do not perforate, so with us the same effect comes from a separate print: a voucher or a loyalty card. There are plenty of uses, and they all revolve around the same idea - something needs to separate without scissors and without a ragged edge.
- Coupons and vouchers - the customer tears off a fragment with a discount or code, and the rest stays with them or with the issuer.
- Tickets and passes - staff tear off the control stub, the second part remains as a keepsake or proof of entry.
- Slips and confirmations - a part to fill in and hand back, a part to keep, clearly separated.
- Cards with a return fragment - invitations with a tear-off RSVP section or surveys with a coupon.
When you design a material with perforation, leave some free space along the line. Important text or graphics should not enter the area of the cuts - otherwise a letter gets sliced after tearing and the edge looks messy. Treat the perforation line as the border of two separate layouts, each with its own breathing room.
Creasing - a groove that keeps paper from cracking
Creasing sounds mysterious, yet it means something very concrete: pressing a groove into the paper exactly where a fold is meant to appear. Instead of forcing a stiff sheet to bend, we guide it along a prepared furrow - the paper then folds cleanly, evenly and without damage.
Why the extra step? Because thicker paper and board have their own character. Bent "dry", without a crease, they can crack on the outer side of the fold - the top layer breaks, the ink crumbles and instead of an elegant edge you are left with a white, ragged mark. Creasing prevents this - it is not a whim but a condition for thicker materials to look good once folded.
When a crease is essential
The thicker and stiffer the paper, the more it needs a crease. In practice this means anything with noticeable thickness that is meant to bend.
- Brochure and catalogue covers - the spine and cover folds crack and "go grey" quickly without a crease.
- Folders with pockets - stiff board without a crease will not close evenly.
- Folded invitations and cards - elegant, thick paper gains a perfectly clean fold.
- Thicker leaflets and folded business cards - anywhere the stiffness of the substrate starts to fight the fold.

Creasing is done from the inner side of the fold - the groove is on the side the paper closes onto. This way the fibres on the outside are stretched gently rather than broken. You do not have to set this up yourself, but it is worth knowing that the direction of the fold matters - which is why it helps to mark clearly in the design where and which way the material should fold.
Folding - the art of the fold
Folding is simply folding a sheet, but it is precisely what turns a flat card into a product. The way it is folded decides how the material opens, in what order it reveals content and how comfortably it is held - the same design folded differently reads completely differently.
Basic types of folding
The names sound like the alphabet, because to a large extent they are - they describe the shape the paper takes once folded.
- In half - one fold, four pages. The simplest folder, plain and clear.
- C-fold - two folds in the same direction, the sheet curls like the letter C. A classic three-panel leaflet that fits in an envelope.
- Z-fold - two folds in opposite directions, an accordion shaped like a Z. It opens "in a run", great for step-by-step presentations.
- Window fold - two side panels fold inward and meet on the axis. An eye-catching "two-way" opening.
The choice of fold type is not only aesthetics - it is the layout of the content. A folded leaflet in a Z guides the reader linearly, panel by panel, so it suits a process or instructions. A window fold builds a moment of surprise and works where you want to impress with the opening itself. If the material simply needs to deliver a set of information in a pocket format, the classic C will do the job.
How to match the fold to the content
Instead of choosing a fold "because it looks nice", start with the question of how the content is meant to be read. The format should guide the reader, not make life harder.
- Break the content into panels - split the material into logical pieces and see how many there are. The number of panels hints at the number of folds.
- Set the order of reveal - what the reader sees first, what after opening, what at the end. Z and C folds reveal content in a different sequence.
- Match the fold type - a step-by-step process suits a Z accordion, an offer "on entry" suits a window, a set of information suits a C or a simple half fold.
- Plan the folds in the design - only now arrange the content so that nothing important falls onto a fold line.

The order of finishing and designing with the lines in mind
When several treatments meet in one material, the order is not accidental. On thicker substrates the rule holds: crease first, then fold. We press the groove and only then fold - so the paper bends along the prepared furrow and does not crack. The reverse order takes revenge with a cracked edge, especially on covers.

That means leaving a safety margin at every fold and near the perforation, not letting key elements enter those areas, and checking that the background flows nicely across a fold.
