If you opened GIMP and instantly felt overwhelmed by all the panels, that is completely normal. The good news is that three ideas - layers, masks and transparency - cover most of what we do when building graphics for advertising materials. Once you understand them, the rest starts falling into place. Let us walk through them calmly, one at a time.
- Layers are transparent sheets stacked on top of each other - you edit each one separately, destroying nothing.
- A layer mask hides parts reversibly: black hides, white shows, grey gives partial transparency.
- The alpha channel handles transparency - thanks to it a logo or photo can have a transparent background.
- You keep a transparent background by exporting to PNG; JPG flattens everything onto white.

Layers - transparent sheets stacked together
Picture classic tracing sheets, one on top of the other. One holds a photo, another a logo, a third some text. Looking from above you see it all together, yet you can move or fix each sheet without touching the others. That is exactly how layers work in GIMP.
The biggest advantage is editing without destroying. If the text sits on its own layer, you can move it, recolour it or delete it while the photo underneath stays untouched. Had you pasted everything onto one layer, every fix would mean tedious cutting and repainting.
Order, or what covers what
You see the layers in the panel on the right (if it is missing, enable it via Windows - Dockable Dialogs - Layers). Whatever sits higher on the list covers whatever is below. So the text should sit above the photo, not under it. You change the order by dragging layers up and down with the mouse.
Opacity and blend modes
Every layer has an opacity slider. Setting it to, say, half makes the layer semi-transparent so what is beneath shows through - perfect for subtle watermarks or darkening a photo under text.
Next to opacity you will find blend modes. These are ways a layer combines with the background: some lighten, others darken or change contrast. To start, it is enough to know that Normal is the standard and Multiply is handy for natural darkening. You will reach for the rest later - just click around and watch the effect.
When several elements always need to move together - for example a logo and the caption beneath it - select their layers and group them. You move and scale a group like a single object, and your project stays tidy.
Layer masks - a smarter eraser
Say you want a photo to fade smoothly toward the bottom and blend into the leaflet background. The tempting move is simple: grab the eraser and wipe away the lower part. The trouble is that the eraser removes pixels for good - change your mind and there is no way back.
This is where the layer mask comes in. It is a greyscale attached to the layer that controls visibility without touching the image itself. The rule is simple and worth remembering:
- Black on the mask hides that part of the layer.
- White shows it fully.
- Grey gives partial transparency - the darker it is, the more the part fades.
Because a mask only hides and never deletes, at any moment you can paint something back to white and the element returns. That is exactly what "non-destructive" means - the project stays flexible right to the end.
A soft transition step by step
Want soft blending? Right-click the layer and choose Add Layer Mask (white, meaning everything visible). Then take the Gradient tool, set it from black to white and drag across the mask in the direction the image should fade. The photo dissolves gently into the background, and nothing underneath is damaged.
A layer mask is an eraser that remembers - it hides but never destroys, so you can return to it endlessly.
Transparency and the alpha channel
Transparency in GIMP is handled by the alpha channel. It is extra information at each pixel telling how visible it is. Without an alpha channel an image always has a full, opaque background - most often white.
A freshly opened photo usually has no alpha channel. You add one in a blink: menu Layer - Transparency - Add Alpha Channel. From then on erased or cut-out spots become truly transparent rather than white.
Removing the background in short
The simplest route is to select the background (for example with the Fuzzy Select tool for a solid colour) and remove it with the Delete key - a checkerboard appears in its place, the sign of transparency. PNG or JPG - when to use which
This choice decides whether transparency survives the save:
- PNG keeps the alpha channel - always pick it when the background must stay transparent (a logo, a cut-out object, an element to place on other graphics).
- JPG does not support transparency - during export it flattens the image onto a white background. It suits ordinary photos that have a full background anyway.
In GIMP you save through File - Export As and type a name ending in .png or .jpg. The extension decides the format.
How it all works together in advertising materials
These three things really shine once you combine them. A few typical uses in everyday print work:
- A logo on any background - a logo with a transparent background (PNG) drops onto a photo, a colourful banner or a light leaflet and always looks clean, with no white rectangle around it.
- Blending a photo with graphics - the photo on one layer, graphic elements on further ones, and a mask lets them merge smoothly.
- A subtle shadow - a soft, semi-transparent shadow under an object adds depth, and you make it as a separate layer with reduced opacity.
- Composing a leaflet - background, photo, text blocks and logo on separate layers give a layout you can rearrange freely until everything clicks.

A mini step by step and common pitfalls
A simple path for a good start when composing an advertising graphic:
- Open the background as the first layer.
- Paste further elements - each lands on its own layer.
- Set the order so that text and logo sit on top.
- Wherever you want a soft transition, add a mask and use a gradient.
- Need a transparent background - add an alpha channel and export to PNG.
And here are the mistakes that catch nearly everyone at the start:
- Working on a single layer - then every fix is a disaster. Spread elements across separate layers from the start.
- Eraser instead of a mask - wiped pixels do not come back. Hide with a mask and you keep a way back.
- Exporting to JPG with transparency in mind - the background will come out white. For transparency, always PNG.
- No alpha channel - you remove the background yet it stubbornly stays white. Add an alpha channel first.
Save the working version in GIMP's own format (.xcf) - it keeps all layers and masks. When a client asks for a change, you open the file and fix one element instead of building the project from scratch. Make the PNG or JPG only at the very end. You do not need to master everything at once. Start with layers, add a mask on your first soft transition, and you will meet the alpha channel on your first cut-out logo.
