How to prepare a print-ready project in GIMP step by step

GIMP is a free graphics program in which you can comfortably prepare a print-ready file - a flyer, a business card, a poster or a cover. You do not need an expensive suite for that. You only need to know where to click: set the right size with bleed, a resolution of 300 dpi, lay out guide lines and, at the end, export the file so your printer will love it. We will walk you through it calmly, step by step.

Start with a good document - size, bleed and resolution

Everything starts in the "Create a New Image" window (File → New). This is the most important moment of the whole job - if you set the right numbers here, the rest goes smoothly. If you skip them, disappointment waits at the end.

First, the size. Take your target format and enlarge it by the bleed. Bleed is a small excess of artwork that extends beyond the cut line - thanks to it, no white sliver is left at the edge after trimming. The bleed is always 3 mm on each side. So a 90×50 mm business card is designed as 96×56 mm (3 mm all around), with the background and photos pulled to the very edge of that larger field.

Then, the resolution. In the advanced options of the new image set 300 pixels per inch (dpi) and work at a 1:1 scale - that is, in the same millimetres in which the piece will be printed. This guarantees that letters and fine details are sharp rather than blurry. A setting of 72 dpi looks fine on screen but turns to mush on paper.

Tip

Set the units to millimetres instead of pixels - it is then easier to stick to real dimensions. GIMP does all the maths for you, and you think in the size of the finished flyer, not in abstract pixels.

Lay out the guide lines - bleed and safety margin

Guide lines are thin, non-printing lines that lead your eye. In GIMP you add them via Image → Guides → New Guide. It is worth laying out two sets.

  • The cut line - where the target format ends (our 90×50 mm). This is where the printer trims the sheet.
  • The safety margin - 5 mm inward from the cut line. Keep all important things - text, logo, phone number - inside this boundary.

The rule is simple: pull backgrounds and photos all the way to the outer edge (into the bleed), and keep content you do not want to lose away from the cut. A guillotine never trims to the hair - the safety margin is your cushion for those fractions of a millimetre.

Colours in GIMP - be aware of RGB

Here an honest conversation is needed. GIMP works in RGB - the mode your monitor glows in. Print works differently, with CMYK inks, and some colours from the screen simply have no equivalent on paper. Intense, vivid colours suffer the most: juicy neons, electric greens and oranges can dim on the print or shift character slightly.

What to do about it in plain terms? First - avoid extreme neons if you want the print to be predictable. Second - treat the colour on screen as an approximation, not a guarantee. The final conversion and interpretation to CMYK is usually done by the printer or happens during the PDF export. That is a normal course of events and nothing to fear - it is just worth knowing about.

Layers, text and images - order pays off

GIMP lets you work in layers, and that is a huge convenience: background separately, photo separately, text separately. This way you fix one element without touching the rest. Keep that order right to the end - you will flatten everything only just before exporting.

Text - readability above all

Write with the text tool, not by "painting" letters. Mind the contrast against the background and do not go too small with the letter size - fine print that is still readable on screen can blur on paper. Before you export the file, it is worth rasterising the text (flattening it to pixels) so the font does not get swapped on another computer. GIMP saves the image as pixels anyway, so rasterising is simply a conscious way of closing the subject.

Images - mind the resolution of the source

Use photos of good quality. A small image from the internet stretched across half a poster turns into little squares. The rule: an image should have enough pixels to come out at around 300 dpi in its target size. Enlarging a small file will not "add" details that are not there. Tip

Save the working version in the GIMP format (.xcf) with the layers kept. Then you export the print file separately while the original stays editable - when a correction comes, you do not start from scratch.

Export for print - the home stretch

You have a finished project on layers. Now you will turn it into a file ready to go to print. Do it on a copy so you do not lose the editable original.

  1. Flatten the image - Image → Flatten Image. All layers merge into one, and any masks and transparency that could cause surprises disappear.
  2. Check the size and resolution - make sure the dimensions match the version with bleed and the resolution is still 300 dpi. Image → Canvas Size and Image → Scale Image will show the numbers.
  3. Export for print - File → Export As. PDF is the safest; if the printer prefers an image file, choose a high-quality format without aggressive compression.
  4. Open the finished file and look at it - zoom into the edges, check for white strips at the cut and whether the text is sharp.
