How to check whether a logo is fit for large-format print

A banner on a fence, a large-format poster on a column or a stand backdrop at a trade fair is the best test for a company logo. Up close everything looks fine, but blown up to several metres it can ruthlessly expose every weakness of the mark - blurry edges, vanishing detail, odd colours. Before you order a large print, it is worth checking whether your logo is ready for it.

Good news: you do not have to be a designer to judge most of this yourself. You just need to know what to look for and to have the right file at hand. We go through it step by step - from the difference between vector and raster, through checking curves, to a simple edge test you can do on your own.

Vector versus raster - the heart of the matter

This is the most important distinction and everything starts with it. Raster graphics are an ordinary photo - a grid of pixels of a fixed number. Vector graphics are a mathematical description: lines, curves and shapes saved as instructions, not as points.

The difference becomes crucial when enlarging. A raster logo blown up onto a banner falls apart into visible squares and blurry edges, because there are as many pixels as in the original - just bigger. A vector logo can be stretched across a whole wall and stays perfectly sharp, because the computer recalculates the shapes anew for the new size.

That is why for large format you want the logo in vector. You will recognise it by extensions such as SVG, PDF, AI or EPS. If you only have the logo as a PNG or JPG, it is raster - and then its usefulness is decided by resolution. Why large format forgives more

Here comes something that often surprises. You might think that since the print is huge, it demands the best of the best files. It is the opposite - under one condition.

It is about viewing distance. You hold a business card in your hand, a dozen or so centimetres from the eye, so every detail is visible and the file must be dense. A banner above an entrance, a large-format poster or a stand backdrop is seen from several or more metres. From that distance the eye physically cannot tell individual dots apart.

That is why raster files for large format are comfortably produced at a lower density than fine print. It is a bit like a painting seen from the far end of a hall - from afar you do not see the brush strokes. This does not mean that just anything will do: you still need a sensible file, only the resolution bar is lower than for print held in hand. Vector solves the problem once and for all, because its sharpness does not depend on size at all.

Tip

Before you order a large print, settle its target size and typical viewing distance. A banner seen from across the street and a stand backdrop seen from two metres are two different worlds of requirements. That one piece of information helps judge whether your file is really enough. Both numbers pay off the moment you order posters, because the format, the paper and the finish are picked separately there.

Whether the logo is in curves

The term sounds mysterious, but the matter is simple and very practical. "Curves" means that the letters and shapes in the logo have been converted from text into a drawing - into outlines. As a result they no longer depend on whether a given font is installed on the computer opening the file.

If the logo is not in curves and the printing machine happens not to have the same font, the text may switch to a different typeface or shift around. The effect can be disastrous: the company name suddenly looks different from how it should. Converting to curves removes this risk, because a letter stops being a letter and becomes a shape.

Without a graphics program you cannot always check this yourself, but you can simply ask the person who prepared the logo whether the file is "in curves" or has "embedded fonts". For large print this is one of the first questions a print shop asks - if you have the answer straight away, you save yourself sending the project back for corrections. Thin lines and details that vanish

Paradoxically, the biggest trouble on large format comes from the finest elements of a logo. Thin lines, delicate ornaments, tiny text under the mark or a fine outline around the letters behave in non-obvious ways as the mark grows.

When enlarged, a thin line that was barely visible on a business card can optically break, fade or disappear on a banner. The reverse can also be a problem: details designed for a small size look disproportionately thick on a large format. It is worth looking at the logo critically and thinking about what will happen to it after being enlarged a few or a few dozen times.

  • Thin outlines and strokes - check they are not so delicate that they lose crispness at large scale.
  • Small supporting text - taglines, addresses or details under the logo can be unreadable or, on the contrary, dominate.
  • Effects and shadows - soft glows and gradients over a large surface can look different than on screen.
  • Decorative details - fine patterns and textures on large format may blur together or, conversely, shout.

If your logo has many small elements, it is worth considering a simplified version specifically for large uses. Many brands keep a separate, cleaner variant of the mark precisely for banners and backdrops. Colours: do not trust the screen

The last pillar is colour. Your monitor shines with its own light and almost certainly shows colours differently from how they will come out of the printer - screen and paper are two different worlds. So for a logo you care about, do not go by what you see on the computer.

A professional logo usually has its brand colours defined in specific values. Pantone is a system of swatch books in which a colour has its own number - it often sits in a brand book, but for a print file it has to be converted to CMYK. CMYK is a way of describing colour for print using four inks. If you have these values from the designer, the company red or navy come out as they should - not "almost" as they should. On large format, colour differences are in fact more visible than on a small print, so it is worth having the source file at hand with correctly saved colours.

A simple edge test - do it yourself

There is one quick way to make a first assessment of a file without any professional tools. Let us call it the edge test. It takes a moment and really says a lot about whether a logo will survive large format.

  1. Open the logo file - ideally the highest-quality one you have.
  2. Zoom in hard - keep zooming until the logo fills the whole screen and then some.
  3. Look at the edges of the letters and shapes - this is where everything is decided.
  4. Judge what you see - if the edges stay perfectly sharp and smooth despite the enlargement, you probably have a vector ready for large format. If little squares, blur or ragged edges appear, it is a raster file and you need to check its resolution against the target size.

This test will not replace a print shop's eye, but in a minute it filters out obvious problems. When a logo passes it with sharp edges, enlarging it does no harm - neither on an advertising poster up to SRA3 or 300 × 640 mm, nor on a banner or a stand backdrop, which are ordered separately as large-format print. When it fails, go back for a better file to the person who designed the mark.

The most important advice at the end is simple: always start from the source file from the designer, not from a copy pulled off a website, a business card or an email footer. Those versions are usually small and raster - great for screen, weak at metres.
